Hello there! We are Sheppey Gospel Plant. We are made up of the Spoccs (Matt, Helene, Martha and Edie), Josh Glover and the Coles (James and Becky). In the summer of 2018 we began a missional adventure of planting a new church in Sheerness, on the beautiful Isle of Sheppey.
Sheerness is a cracking little seaside town! Once economically thriving in the height of the steel mill trade and the Sheerness docks, Sheerness is now one of the most deprived towns in the whole of Kent. Sheerness has a Blue Flag [ie, very clean and safe] beach and an awesome town clock tower in the centre of the high street. We love living here and discovering more and more of Sheppey as a whole.
When you tell people that you live in Sheerness, or Sheppey even, people will either look at you blankly or pull a face at you - as if to ask why?!? There is somewhat of a narrative over this Island similar to one we see over Nazareth in scripture - “what good can come out of Nazareth (or Sheppey)?”
Our heart is that we would be a church for the unchurched; our primary goal is to see people who do not know Jesus become disciples of Jesus. We want to be a place where anyone can come, be welcomed and hear the Gospel. We long to see people believe and live out of the hope and joy of the Good News of Jesus; for people to know there is a better story for their lives than all the world has to offer. Ultimately we want to see the lives of individuals and local communities transformed so that they may flourish.
We’re excited about the potential of having ID interns coming along to join us on this adventure! There’ll be opportunities to get involved in the life of this plant and the life of our local community. We would get any IDers involved in serving the local Foodbank, serving on a weekly community outreach project to the marginalised and lonely in our town, a community cafe, weekly discipleship night and the weekly running and jobs needed to make plant life happen. We are also keen to give IDers an opportunity to explore different missional initiatives that they may have a passion for or to get involved in other areas of local community life they feel passionate about, as well as having time to do some paid work if needed.
Want to know more? Get in touch with us or even come for a visit one day! We’d love to help you work out what life could like on the Island and how to get here!
MORE ABOUT ID:
Why be an ID intern?
ID is a year-long church internship program designed to help you walk with Jesus into the adventures that he has for you. Over the course of the year you'll be immersed in the life and mission of a local church, where you can serve in a wide variety of exciting ministries and be lovingly discipled. We also expose you to exciting missional opportunities with Relational Mission churches in the UK and Europe.
We want to intentionally disciple you. To help you grow in knowledge and passion for God, to learn you are you, and how you can live and speak for Jesus in every area of life.
Why host or send an ID intern?
Our hope is that ID not only blesses the individual interns but also the churches that host and send them. Having an ‘IDer’ in your church who is well invested in and given opportunities to serve and step out demonstrates a commitment to investing in individuals.
Likewise, sending folks on ID shows that as a church you are committed to Christ’s commission and value the apostolic as much as the local.
So, who could you send onto the course? Could your church offer someone a placement?
Who is it for?
Anyone aged 18+ who is able to take a year out and who wants to grow in their faith.
ID can be a wonderful opportunity for college/school leavers to get a solid foundation of theology and character before heading to the work place or off to university. Likewise for those finishing university considering what to do next. We have also had a good number of men and women in their twenties and thirties take career breaks in order to do the course. We haven't yet had anyone in retirement come onto the course, but we’re open to that!
I'm in! How do I apply?
The application process can be found on the ID webpage. Applicants complete an online form which comes through to the ID team who then contact the sending church to discuss the applicant and the placement options available.
Or you can contact Matt Fell directly to ask any questions and to find out more.
