Wired to Hear by Shawn Bolz and Bob Hasson

A review by Claire, from the church community in Seoul, South Korea

He is going to use believers in the marketplace as the front-liners to culture. That means the stakes are really high and the war is very great, so we can’t go after this in our own strength, wisdom or power. We must build with spiritual tools so we can bear natural fruit that has spiritual implications over lives. (Shawn Bolz)

For the majority of us, our ministry is in the marketplace. It is so important to remember that God loves to be involved in every area of our lives, including our workplace. Wired to Hear is full of stories of people who have sought God for wisdom, advice, insight, discernment and vision in their area of work, and seen incredible things unfold. These stories come from those working in various industries, such as fashion, beauty, entertainment, hospitality, and painting and decorating.

Shawn and Bob do a fantastic job of exploring the lives of those living in Biblical times who positively impacted their marketplace, and teach us how we can learn from them. At the end of each chapter there is an ‘Activation’ which encourages us to reflect on where we are currently at, in relation to the chapter, and gives us some practical points that we could apply to our own situations.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to take the next steps in opening themselves up more to what God wants to do in and through them in their marketplace. You can also connect with Shawn and Bob on their weekly podcast Exploring the Marketplace.

The Knowledge of the Holy by A W Tozer

A review by Dan Hayter, who oversees our LEAD course

‘What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.’

So writes A. W. Tozer at the start of The Knowledge of the Holy. I think he’s right! We worship in response to who God is and what He has done, so the depth of our worship will be directly related to the depth of our knowledge of God. Tozer’s aim in this book is to help us grow in our knowledge of God.

This book is definitely a classic! But even though it’s over 60 years old, its theme is (literally) timeless. It’s short, but it’s meaty. Each chapter is a brief but insightful meditation on something which is true of God (what theologians call his attributes). Tozer simply (but not simplistically) explores topics like God’s holiness, His eternity, His wisdom, His goodness…

This book will make your head hurt. That’s a good thing. Books about God should do that! After all, He is utterly beyond our comprehension. But this book doesn’t just leave us with a healthily-hurting head. It moves our hearts to worship, as all good theology should. And Tozer provides us with material to fill our worship. Each chapter begins with a carefully written prayer and ends with an extract of a hymn. It’s ideal to use as a daily meditation or devotion.

When I’ve been aware that my conception of God is inadequate, this book has lifted my eyes back to who he is. If you want to grow in your knowledge and worship of God, read this book.

Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund

A review by Michelle Safo, who serves on the Business Link leadership team

I've recently finished reading this book and I am so thankful for how the author Dane has helped me gain an even deeper understanding and beautiful insight into the heart of Jesus.

Gentle and Lowly is a beautiful book tenderly displaying Christ’s heart for us. Relating to the scriptures throughout the book, readers are given the opportunity to reflect on the questions, ‘Who is Jesus?’ and  ‘What is his deepest heart?’, providing a refreshing reminder of God’s love for us. Lowly gentleness is who He is…

Go to him.
Open yourself up to him
Let him love you
- Dane Ortlund

This book also encouraged me to reflect on God's glory in a new way with a particular focus on his goodness, grace, and mercy. I intend to go back to this book again and again reading it slowly to reflect and be encouraged by the wonderful truths.
